Final Score: JB 1 RNC 0 — Jackson Browne and Republicans Settle Copyright Case

Congrats to JB on his victorious legal decision over the RNC and John McCain’s camp. The RNC & Co. appropriated Browne’s song, Running On Empty, putting it to use illegally during their 2008 presidential bid.

Of course, I don’t think Sen. McCain had anything to do with it. Let’s face it, he isn’t the most tech-savvy. But, there are many ways to illegally co-opt someone else’s copyright other than via the internet / computer. And this case shines new light on licensing and fair use. Use a non-original composition in some type of public performance without permission (i.e. BOTH licenses: song & recording) and you have violated the author and publisher’s copyright.
